Drama Club : Fall In Love With Me

While I have been sick with the hurt arm this last month or so I have been taking a break from this website BUT, thanks to DF and my friend Firnlambe, I have not been absent from blogging about asian dramas that I like so much.

I’ve joined Firnlambe and Aunnie  on Soju-Like-Kdrama to recap/review  Aaron Yan’s newest drama  Fall In Love With Me.  I’ve been an Aaron Yan fan for awhile.   I first saw his drama KO One when I was following up on his band mate Jiro Wang work.  I then watched Just You and loved him in that.   I was excited to see him in this new drama and boy oh boy has it been crazy.   I can honestly say the last few episodes have been hard to watch because of the emotional train wreck we the audience have to wade through.

Drama Club : Trot Lovers

I’m part of my third Drama Club on Dramafever.  I cannot describe how much fun I’m having.  Yes, its a lot of work trying to get 3 ladies together to comment on an episode, and thank you Google docs.   Boy, does that make it easier.

The first 6 episodes are out.   I’ll be adding the links for Episodes 5 and 6 when they post this week, so here are the links for the first 4 episodes.

Episodes 1-2    3-4

Now,  just a little review so far.   I fell in love with this series with the first episode.  Our two male leads took on characters that were polar opposites from their last projects.   Let me explain.

Joon Hyun:  Self professed god of music, petty, selfish and a colossal jerk.  Oh the stuff this boy pulls….   *shakes head*

Petty1 Petty Petty2

Entertainingly played by actor Ji Hyun Woo.  This is Hyun Woo’s first role since his discharge from the military.    Now what made this great for me was that this character was NOTHING like his last one.   His last role was the strong, almost silent protector of  Queen In-Hyun’s Man.  He was everything a girl dreams about in her fantasy white knight who over comes time and space for love.   The chemistry he had with his leading lady was amazing and I really like watching this boy kiss.  Joon Hyun is NOTHING like Boong Do and I’m so happy about that.   I hate when actors gets type-cast.   Hyun Woo does a great job of bringing to life this egotistical asshole who believes anything is okay as long as he’s right.   This drama takes this character on a roller coaster ride in just the first 4 episodes and its a humbling experience for him.

Geun Woo:   Son of the music company president who contracts with our lead actress.   He’s flaky,  a bit klepto and doesn’t take himself seriously.  He knows he’s a spoiled rich brat and has the humor and insight to laugh at himself.

Flaky Oppa TL2a TL10a

This character is what sold me.  Shin Sung Rok last played an evil psychopath in My Love From Another Star.  This guy was so evil that anytime he smiled you knew someone was about to die.  He was brilliantly evil and Sung Rok was compelling.   We nick named him Scary Oppa.  Geun Woo is anything but.   We go from scary and evil to goofy and light hearted….and you buy it.  Completely.  He comes across as a flake but you soon learn that that is a cover for someone who is very very observant.

These are but two of the very entertaining characters in this delightful drama.

MIMI – A Review

A short 4 part mini series, Mimi is about a young web comic artist  who is struggling after losing his memory.   Shim Chang Min plays our struggling Han Min Woo.   He brings a beautiful nuanced performance to Min Woo who is a loner.  He’s a sad character whose only source of warmth is the occasional visit from his mother.

Mimi1

Min Woo is working on a new comic and its just not going well.   His forgotten memories are trying to come back and they are putting him through hell.  The real problem?   He doesn’t know he’s got forgotten memories.

He has found an old calendar that he doesn’t remember writing in.   Its the genesis behind his newest web comic.  Unfortunately, he’s run into a serious case of writers block.  He knows the story is supposed to go somewhere, but he just can’t think of what comes next.  The mystery calendar leads him on a journey to find the answers and maybe finally set his mind at rest.  As he struggles to find answers to questions he doesn’t know he’s joined on this journey by a few people.

Mimi3

Meet Jang Eun Hye.  She’s the manager of the company that is producing his web comic.  She has a forward vision about the importance of web comics and wants to actually have a gallery opening showcasing the talent.  Min Woo is one of her picks for that presentation.  As she gets to know him, she develops a crush on him, but as she tries to move forward, Min Woo is too busy looking back for answers to a past he doesn’t remember.

Mimi2

Meet Mimi, our title character.   Its clear from the beginning that she is infatuated with our artist.  She follows him everywhere, but there is something out of kilter.  Min Woo apparently can’t see her.   He might sense that she is there…..or he might not.   She is the keeper of his lost memories.  A ghost who is looking out for her Min Woo.

Mimi4

Meet our grim reaper.   He is keeping a close eye on Mimi and Min Woo.   He is both guide and guard.

This short series, not only having a moving love story, also talks about the importance of our memories, good or bad, to our overall happiness.  Good or bad, our memories help define our lives and gives us grounding.   When Mimi dies, she requests that the Grim Reaper remove all memories of her from Min Woo.   In my opinion this is an incredibly selfish request.   I’ve seen people make requests of “just forget me”  when things don’t work out or go their way or if they are dying.   Sorry peeps, we humans don’t work that way.   I don’t know what it is with Asian culture that puts so much emphasis on not burdening people.   It gets to the point in these stories that people do incredibly stupid things to avoid burdening anyone with any type of emotion.  In the process, they deny so much that both people need in the relationship, whatever the dynamics are.  I guess having the understanding that the challenges of caring for others who are going through hard times and also dealing with the suffering of bad memories are part of what makes us grow into better people makes it seem silly to deny a person their memories.  It is the height of selfishness to me.  Its not really about the sadness or happiness of the other person, its the responsibility the leaving individual feels that they want to get rid of.  Life doesn’t work out that way and as Mimi shows so beautifully,  memories of good and sad times can be beautiful things that allow for forward movement in our lives to other good things.

I’ve had my share of nightmare experiences.  Things I’d probably rather forget, but I can’t forget what I learned from them.  Those lessons are invaluable and that means that I can’t even really regret the hell I went through.

Mimi is a wonderful story of first love and dealing with the pain of death.  I highly recommend it as its a very well told story.  The way the story is laid out to you in pieces takes a little bit of getting used to, but you catch on quickly.   Since Mimi always looks the same, you have to watch for Min Woo’s hair.  Sometimes that’s your first clue one is in a memory scene.   The ending is realistic and wonderful for a show that has a supernatural edge to it.   While its not the happy ending you might be expecting, its still a happy ending none the less.

Worth watching.

Angel Eyes Drama Club Reviews

Having been sick the last few weeks, sitting at my computer has been difficult.  I’m better now so I’ve got a bunch of stuff to update.  I spent my time in bed watching lots of dramas and I’ve got some catching up to do.  First things first.  Here’s the Dramafever Drama Club reviews for Angel Eyes.   Its been interesting because of the different format style then was used in the Bride of the Century Drama Club.   The jury is still out on which I like better, but I will say I had more stress and fun on Bride of the Century.  But then, BotC was a romantic comedy with lots to make fun of and Angel Eyes is a mysterious melodrama.  The women I worked with in both groups were and are fantastic.

Bride of the Century Final Drama Club post

I am going to really miss hanging out with Taleena and Firnlambe as we laugh about Bride of the Century.  I’m happy to say that they will both give occasional posts to this blog so I have a reason to pester them and I hope to keep them as friends for a long time.

This was an amazing drama with a great story.  It kept its secrets very close to its chest so you never really knew where the writer was taking you.  We enjoyed every minute and here is Part 1 and Part 2 of our last hurrah as the BotC drama club.

Secret Love Affair Ep. 5-8

In the first 4 episodes of this drama, we see the development of how our male lead, Sun Jae, comes to fall in love with our female lead, Hye Won.  Now in these next 4 episodes we see what drives our straight forward Hye Won to choose Sun Jae.  I would love to show these pictures in more light, but this show is really intimately lit for most scenes and since I don’t own photoshop and am also not talented in that area… we’ll just have to make do with how dark these pictures are.

SLA15

When we left our story,  Sun Jae had been rescued by Prof. Kang and brought to the house.   Hye Won and Sun Jae ended up playing together again and built more camaraderie between them.   They explained a few things to each other and cleared the air a little more so that Sun Jae had an idea that Hye Won did not want to put her life into jeopardy even while she acknowledged his crush on her.   While she was crossing the line a few times in her fantasies, see picture below, she was behaving and trying to keep him at a distance.

SLA16

That starts to crumble however when the bosses who make up her life start a interpersonal war for power that add more stress then Hye Won can handle.  Lets take a look at our three players I want to refer to as the axis of evil.

SLA21 SLA19

In the second picture you have our Chairman and his spoiled, unhappy daughter from his first wife.  The picture above is his second wife and hated stepmother of said daughter.  They women are in a power struggle over the foundation and other investments.  The daughter, Young Woo, may actually be a decent human being.  She seems upset by the corruption going on in the art center under the direction of Stepmom, Sung Sook, but instead of being smart about it, she has fallen in love with a scheming opportunist who is just out to use her for her money.  Even I can tell what a slimeball he is.  She is long time friends with Prof. Kang and at one time was friends with Hye Won as well until the Stepmom took her over.  Hye Won tries to balance the needs of these three overly rich and spoiled people as they try to hide money, investments, affairs and back deals over the art center.  But as is the case when you try to please everyone, you please no one and they all make comments that show they are willing to bite the hand that helps them because after all,  Hye Won is expendable.

SLA18

Prof. Kang overhears a conversation between Sun Jae and Hye Won where they are talking about giving each other hugs.   Now,  since Hye Won was not supposed to be where her husband found her, it has put his suspicions on full alert.  Neither of our leads know that he overheard this conversation.

Through the rest of the episodes, we deal with  Sun Jae auditioning and getting accepted into the school,  Prof. Kang becoming increasingly suspicious and with the situation with the axis of evil getting more precarious.   When Hye Won is attacked by Young Woo, her husband reacts with concern that someone will think he hit her instead of concern over her.  He’s  aware of how tough her situation is but he does little to ease it or comfort her.   In another instance of Hye Won being humiliated and degraded in front of Sun Jae by the axis of evil, she learns that Sun Jae wanted nothing more than to step to her defense and protect her but due to his age and lack of position, could only watch helplessly  and do nothing.   Hye Won comes to see that the only person on her side, is this young pianist who loves her passionately.  With all her foundations crumbling, Hye Won foolishly runs to the only source of comfort she has.  In an ironic twist, Prof. Kang has gone to a psychic to see if his wife is cheating on him with Sun Jae only to be told that he needs the boy to advance in his career.   That he would be a fool to ever let him go and to not lose him under any circumstance.  He’s also told that Hye Won priority is work and that she would not betray him.   Since we know that she has gone to Sun Jae for physical and emotional comfort, it leaves the viewer wondering what her loyalties will be to her husband now.

Personally, I don’t really like these characters.   I feel sorry for Sun Jae because he’s just in over his head.  He has no freaking clue about the train that’s about to run him over.  Building a reputation as a genius pianist is hard enough but now he’s got this affair to deal with and it could and probably will cost him everything.   Hye Won can easily be destroyed by the axis of evil and so it will be interesting to see what she does now that she has finally opened herself up to a weakness that can be manipulated, which she didn’t have before.  I don’t feel that she really cares about Sun Jae, just that he is the only source of comfort in her boring and increasingly dangerous world.   She should have turned to her husband, but for whatever reasons did not.  They are good enough friends, and he’s not exactly a bad person,  that I think if she had made it  plain what she was going through, he’d be on her side.  Maybe.

As episode 8 comes to a close we have our lovers who have just made love for the first time and we have an increasingly conflicted Prof. Kang.  Will he look the other way so he doesn’t lose Sun Jae?

Ep 1-4 review

Angel Eyes Drama Club Ep 1-2

I’m excited to be part of a second Drama Club with Dramafever.  This time I’m going to be reviewing the new drama Angel Eyes with Tanya and Gina.  Our review style is going to be different than I took part in Bride of the Century Drama Club.  It will be an interesting change, I’ll get to see the pros and cons of the two different styles.  I had a lot of fun with Bride of the Century and I’m sad this is the last week.

Here is Part 1 and Part 2 of our review.

Secret Love Affair ep. 1 – 4

I originally wasn’t going to even watch this particular drama because its about adultery and having been the jilted spouse, I have strong opinions about that sort of thing.  I also don’t like watching shows that have behavior that I don’t want to emulate.  Monkey see, monkey do really does apply to life.  A friend of mine told me that the first episode has some really great piano playing in it and knowing how I like that sort of thing, she suggested I just watch  the first episode.  Fine.   So, with prejudice in hand, I watched the first episode and found myself intrigued by the characters I saw.

SLA2

First was our married couple.   Kang Joon Hyung, played by Park Hyeok-Kwon, is a piano professor who is surrounded by more talented colleagues.  His wife is Oh Hye Won, played by Kim Hee-Ae,  an elegant former pianist who now works for the foundation that sponsers the school that Joon Hyung works at.   She must balance her loyalties between her two bosses who are the second wife and first wife daughter of the foundations/school’s president.  To say that Step Mom and Step daughter are at odds for control of the school is putting it mildly.   Her marriage to Joon Hyung is friendly but loveless.  She is a kind, straight as an arrow sort of person who gets the job done. She lives her life in an upstanding way and is considered almost a stick in the mud by her more corrupt bosses, but they like her anyway.   She also has a knack for knowing excellent piano playing when she hears it and is often asked by her husband to listen to potential new students.

SLA1

Lee Sun Jae, played by  Yoo Ah In,  is a poor delivery boy who loves the piano.  He’s basically taught himself to play and has next to no formal training.  He listens to good piano players and then copies their style to improve his own.  He comes from a world where his love of music are unrecognized or seen as just a quirk.  He has a girlfriend who is more into him than he is into her.  He is a very needy character looking for approval.   When he unintentionally plays a piano tuned for a major concert, he comes to the notice of Professor Kang who asks his wife to judge whether he is really as amazing as he seems.

SLA5

Sun Jae honest and loving playing captures Hye Won’s musical heart as any music lover knows too well.   She sees before her an amazing talent that needs some direction but that is all.   Sun Jae however is captured by her care and appreciation of him and his music.   Her first evaluation of him lasts like 8 hours and both are emotionally spent by the experience.  Sun Jae quickly develops a crush on his beautiful teacher and in a twist, confides this love to an online confidant that turns out to be Hye Won in disguise, who unbeknownst to them both had been talking to him for awhile over piano playing and an illness that Sun Jae had.  Charmed by his confession but not interested in confusing the boy, she keeps things at arms length.  They convince Sun Jae to enroll in their school but on the day of his audition his mother passes away.

SLA7

This puts Sun Jae into a tailspin.   His mother died while she was out getting him something for his audition and he feels guilty about it.  He sells off his piano and enlists for civil service, running away from what he loves most as he tries to hide from the pain.   Not wanting him to totally give up on his music,  Hye Won sends him a book about a famous pianist with underlined phrases to help shake him up and bring him back to his senses.    Moved by her care and desperately needing comfort, he ends up at her house and confronts her with his confused feelings, leading to a kiss neither of them are prepared for.

SLA9

While Sun Jae is more than willing to start something with his beautiful teacher,  Hye Won is not about to jeopardize her life.   Once she comes to her senses she tells him to leave and pretends nothing happened.   This hurts and angers Sun Jae and later on contributes to him getting in trouble and lands himself in jail.

SLA10

Professor Kang comes to the rescue to get him out and he brings him to his house as a way to protect him.   Hye Won, this whole time, has been mulling over all their interactions and is struggling with his effect on her.

This is where we find ourselves by the end of the 4th episode.   I hadn’t intended to watch all four up to this point, but I was curious how such a straight laced character would get herself into trouble.  Having a needy musician desperately needing your comfort could do it if you don’t keep those boundaries up and I think Sun Jae is going to push them to the limit.
